GreenStitch Episode 5 - Lori from Sew Forth Now

What fun to chat with Lori from the Sew Forth Now podcast! I've learned so much from her over the the past few years and she's just as nice and genuine as she is on her own show.

A few tips from Lori about avoiding waste in sewing:

  • Make a muslin to ensure a good fit. Old bedsheets work great.

  • Cut carefully - once you cut, there's no going back.

  • Save your scraps, especially with knits. Often you can save a major fail by putting those scraps to use. And they're great for piping or binding.

  • Approach buttonholes with caution - double-check positioning, make a practice run with the same interfacing as your garment, etc.

  • Have a tissue pattern that you know you'll never use again? Use it for creative packing material.

Lori, thanks so much for a fun interview!

Here are links to some of the other things I mentioned in this episode.

Emily's great tutorial for little boy shorts out of a men's shirt.

And above are the four pairs I made for the young nephews. They're now in Indiana - early reviews are positive!

Sleeves left over from two of the pairs of shorts....could they become something for the twins' little sister?

Here's the hostess apron experiment. I sort of liked it earlier. Looking at it now...not so much. I think I can find a better use for that apricot muslin.

As always, thank you so much for listening!

  2. Thanks for a great podcast! I really enjoy listening and am getting caught up.

I remember a saying that I learned from my grandmothe (I think!):
    Use it up,
    Wear it out,
    Make it do,
    or do without!

Turns out we were green before green was cool. :-)

My favorite way to source sewing supplies is at garage and estate sales. I snatch up any ribbons, zippers, elastic, etc, that people usually sell for pennies. I figure that I save at least four ways: save space in a landfill, not paying retail, save the time to make a run to the fabric store, and save the gas, too. Makes me very happy!

I'm looking forward to the next podcast!

  3. Another great podcast! Looking forward to the next one.

I was inspired by the Wardrobe Refashion podcast, and this made a trip to the thrift store on Monday to buy some new-to-me office wear an near emergency!

I now have three skirts that are calling out to be refashioned - - one is too long, so I'm going to cut a big chunk off the bottom, split that in half, and create a ruffle for the hem. -- another is again too long, but the edge is a pretty lace, so I'm going to cut off the waist band, make a casing, and run elastic through it. The third is just wrong, wrong, wrong - but the fabric is so gorgeous, I'm going to keep an eye out for a pattern for a straight skirt, and make a whole new skirt.

I would have never tried this if it hadn't been for your interview with Nikki Prested. Thanks!
